“You had me at benefits.”

With the mega merger of Penguin and Random House (now Penguin Random House), five publishers—Hachette, HarperCollins, Macmillan, Simon & Schuster, and Penguin Random House—now control a vast majority of the books published. Penguin Random House alone operates with a global reach of nearly 250 imprints and publishing almost a quarter of all English-language books in the world.

Independent presses like Dock Street Press and Big Fiction Magazine are the brave ones who pull the emerging writer, the unheard voice, from the proverbial mud. We clean them off, make them sparkle, and then build them a goldarn mountain to shout their words from. And we wouldn’t mind your help in the process. Perhaps you have read what The Dock Street Story Project is all about? If not, we invite you to click to the about page and learn about what we’re trying to accomplish. Once you’ve done that, come back and find out how you can make a difference in independent publishing and Seattle area public schools. For those of you who know about The Dock Street Story Project, and are here to help, we thank you for your time and support! Your donations enhance the cultural and educational worlds you live in.

“I thought you said something about benefits?

Any monthly sustaining gift over one hundred (100) dollars will get you into the very swank Editor’s Club. Along with an individually signed, complimentary copy of every title we put out, you’ll also be our invited guest to release parties and other Dock Street events. Should you be feeling extra generous, give a monthly sustaining gift of one hundred fifty (150) dollars and be a part of the Publisher’s Club. A mere fifty dollars more allows for all the benefits of the Editor’s Club with the added bonus of unique opportunities to meet with your favorite Dock Street or Big Fiction writer. Perhaps you’re having a dinner party and looking for an exciting, articulate guest…the Publisher’s Club can arrange that. Maybe your book club is in need of a sharp wit and/or a beautiful face…the Publisher’s Club knows several.

Maybe your pocketbook is not in the surplus it once was due to your generous demeanor?

Give a monthly sustaining gift of ten (10) dollars and we’ll tack your name under our list of benefactors.

Give twenty (20) dollars a month and receive a signed copy of your favorite Dock Street title, which is essentially like owning a piece of history. Also, it should be said, any one-time donation is wonderfully valuable, and if this is more of your style, we thank you and thank you and thank you and thank you!

Single donations of $25 or more will receive a heartfelt thank you, and your name under the READERS list of benefactors.

Here’s some fine print, should you have any questions

Guidelines and Requirements for Partially Deductible Gifts:

Each time The Dock Street Story Project (TDSSP) provides goods and services in exchange for a donation, TDSSP is required to report the value of the goods or services to the donor and to Fractured Atlas. The value of the goods or services is based on a good faith estimate. TDSSP may use any reasonable method to estimate the fair market value (FMV) of goods or services it provided to the donor, as long as it applies the method in good faith. TDSSP may estimate the FMV of goods or services that generally are not commercially available by using the FMV of similar or comparable goods or services. Goods or services may be similar or comparable even if they are not exactly the same as the goods or services being valued.

In other words:

If you give a sustaining monthly gift of (20) twenty dollars and receive a signed book in return, all but $16 (or value of book) of that donation will be fully tax-deductible.

If you give a sustaining monthly gift of (100) one hundred dollars and receive a copy of every book Dock Street puts out that year (roughly five to six books/year @ $16/book) and accept the invitation to release events/parties (roughly $100 per person, per donation) in return, all but $196.00 of that donation will be fully tax-deductible.

If you give a sustaining monthly gift of (150) one hundred and fifty dollars and receive a copy of every book Dock Street puts out that year (roughly five to six books/year @ $16/book), meet personally with an author (roughly $100 value) and accept the invitation to release events/parties (roughly $100 per person, per donation) in return, all but $296.00 of that donation will be fully tax-deductible.

Single donations with a received gift are as follows:

A gift of (50) fifty dollars or more with a received Dock Street book ($16) allows for $34 of your donation to be fully tax-deductible.

A gift of (100) one hundred dollars or more with a received Dock Street book ($16) and an issue of Big Fiction Magazine ($15) allows for $69 of your donation to be fully tax-deductible.

A gift of (500) five hundred dollars or more with a year’s worth of published Dock Street books ($80-$96) and a subscription to Big Fiction Magazine ($30) allows for $390-$374 of your donation to be fully tax-deductible.

A gift of (1000) one thousand dollars or more with a year’s worth of published Dock Street books ($80-$96) and a subscription to Big Fiction Magazine ($30), and an invitation to attend Dock Street/Big Fiction/The Dock Street Story Project events/parties/galas allows for $740 of your donation to be fully tax-deductible.

However, if you choose not to receive a gift in return for your donation, then all of your donation will be tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law.

Under Fractured Atlas guidelines sustaining monthly donations can only be partially deductible if accepted by check. All checks must be made out to “Fractured Atlas” with The Dock Street Story Project in the memo line. Donations (both single and sustaining) received by credit card must be accepted through Fractured Atlas via TDSSP’s donation page on the Fractured Atlas website. On the donation page of the website donors also have the option to select if they would like their gift to be sustaining or a single-time gift. For more information regarding our fiscal sponsorship, we invite you to visit Fractured Atlas’ homepage www.fracturedatlas.org.

The Dock Street Story Project is a sponsored project of Fractured Atlas, a non-profit arts service organization. Contributions for the charitable purposes of The Dock Street Story Project must be made payable to “Fractured Atlas” only. The value of Dock Street books or Big Fiction Magazine received by donor is $15.00-$16.00, respectively. Any contribution above that amount is tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law.
