Named after a type of storm reputed for its southwest origins and unexpected arrival across the sea, the Sou’Wester First Book Award was founded by Dock Street Press to usher in new writers and their first books. First books are reputably hard to sell, often times an exhausting endeavor for both the publisher and the writer. However, every attempt at a book carries potential, especially the first one. The Sou’Wester Award acknowledges this potential and the fact that first-books can often surpass their reputation in the book world. To help overcome the first-book hurdle for upcoming writers, this award is for any kind of first book. The goal is to recognize the author’s skill and by doing so, give the author a boost in the competition.
This year, we are proud to present three finalists for the Sou’Wester First Book Award:
Angela J. Fountas with The Good Girl
Daniel Mancilla with All the Proud Fathers
Julie Stewart with Three Sisters: A Hybrid Collection
The winner will be announced on August 30th!
